The Secret of Dreams; part seven
On a Cold Dark Night

Shaking off the sight of a tiny person, riding the back of a dragonfly and disappearing into the woods from my mind’s eye I turned around. Walking away from the log, a familiar song began to play in the back of my mind. The lyrics; “Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination” seemed very fitting at the moment. Was all this weirdness real or not? Because it really seemed terribly real at the moment and that was just a tad bit frightening. If I consumed the juice of the grapes or barley and hops, I would say it may be a severe case of the zings and other after effects of consuming just a bit too much. But I don’t consume beverages of the sort so that let that out. Geesh, was it real then? It had to be, right?

Making my way over to the track wanna be I starting walking my laps. My thoughts over lapping and playing with that silly song that would not go away. It wasn’t my imagination was it? If so, when did my imagination get that vivid? Had I not lost that, set aside that exercise long ago?

Maybe, I’m really still asleep and this is all a dream. A really long, dream. But no. Its way too cold out here. I would have awakened by now if for no reason but to find another blanket. Or to realize I was only dreaming and I’m not really all this cold.

One thing about  it, I’ll not watch that movie the same way again.

As I made my way around the track, I reached the lower turns. Out of nowhere came that dragonfly once again. The tiny being still on its back. Small or not, the voice I heard was loud and clear. “I’ve got another puzzle for you.”

“What?” I tried to ask, but they were already gone. This is just too weird. I moved to continue walking when they were back.

“If you are wise you will listen to me.”

Throwing up my arms without thinking I almost yelled, “Why, are you quoting Willy Wonka songs?”My sudden and near violent movement caught the dragonfly off guard and the created turbulence sent it and rider spinning through the air. When it regained control, even from a distance I could tell the rider was not happy.”It will be a cold, dark night before I return for you.”

Quickly disappearing into the woods I was left standing looking after them a bit dumbfounded. This is just so weird. If I’m asleep, I’m ready to wake up. If I’m not asleep and this is real, I would love an explanation as to what in the blue moon is going on.

Within moments, before me was not one, but several dragonfly. There were no riders, no individuals visible anywhere, but I clearly heard, ‘You have been summoned. Follow us, now.’ Not one to argue with angry dragonfly I turned and began to follow them through the woods.

Making my way down the hillside, I stumbled and slid several times but didn’t completely lose my balance. Just my dignity. At the base of the hill they turned toward the right and flew at a speed that was difficult to keep up with. Yet, I managed. I wasn’t thrilled when I stepped into the mud created by the small stream, but still I followed. Finally the dragonfly landed on a small branch extending from a fallen tree. When I caught up I noticed the tree was hollow.

From the depths of the tree stepped the Elder of the small people I had met earlier. Watching him walk forward I could tell by his body language he too, was not happy. And it wasn’t him that had been on the dragonfly. Stopping beside the biggest of the dragonfly he gently rested his hand beside its head. He looked for all the word as if he were fighting to regain composure. Some how I knew, I had made a serious error in ticking this person off.

After a few minutes, he finally spoke. “If you are to help and be of help for us, you must have a sense of wonder and curiosity. You have to accept the different, the strange, the unusual. You have to rebuild a sense of imagination. We are real, but we are more than real. We hold magic ways, but live by non-magical methods. We are warriors, we are farmers, we are the granters of wishes. We have always been able to handle things on our own, but times are changing, we need someone between us and them. We need you, but you have to open your mind to possibilities. Can you do that? Are you capable and willing? Is it possible for you to accept that among the real, there is an entirely different world of possibilities?”

When he grew silent and stood watching me, I knew that nothing less than the truth would work here. I looked down at my muddy shoe, my jeans wet, part way up the leg. The cold was real. This was real. I had to be honest, I had left dreams and wishes behind me, losing the belief in them somewhere..back there. Now, they seemed to have found me. Smiling I looked up at the Elder before me. Answering simply, “I can.”
