Day 214; Footnotes of Sure Mom

What would we do without my son?

My dad wanted to go to the casino this morning. Even though I have no money to play, I’m curious as to how the place looks and was toying with the idea of riding along. Right up until mom called. She told me that while she didn’t feel like driving dad over there, she felt well enough for him to go. Would my son take him? Of course he said yes. then, she asked if I would come down around eleven and walk her dog. Sure mom, no problem. I guess there’s my clear sign that I have no business in the casino.

It was a few minutes after ten when they left as they had to stop for gas on the way. The casino really isn’t that far away so it wasn’t long before they were there and dad was getting to play.

Mom came up here not long after they left and asked me if I would do something for her online. Sure mom. In the end I didn’t get it done because it was going to cost her more than she had been paying when she used the things they mailed her. That for some reason she hadn’t received. During the time I was outside talking with mom, both of my dogs were inside this room, as they tend to bark a lot when anyone is outside. While I was distracted, Molly totally destroyed my flyswatter. She usually doesn’t mess with anything, but  she really did a number on that thing. She knew she had messed up, but from the looks of the destruction, she had a blast while doing the deed.

I did go down at eleven to walk mom’s small dog. That silly thing walked me all over the yard and down the road and half way across my nieces yard before finally doubling back for home. I didn’t know a dog that small could have to go that many times, but anyway..I got her walked and back home safely. Got the dog inside and headed back for home. I was in the process of writing my morning blog and wanted to finish.

I wasn’t back home long when mom called again. She was loading her dishwasher and there was chocolate cake left did I want it? Sure mom. (Who could possibly turn down made from scratch chocolate cake?)

Then mom calls to tell me they were already on their way home, dad must not have been doing very well. Turns out my son got bored and told his grandpa that he was leaving, he could stay and play if he wanted to but wasn’t sure how he would get home. My understanding is that dad looked from my son, to the game and back then said okay, got up and left with my son.

I did leave eventually the house today, we were out of cat food for the official cat and some items for human consumption. How the need for a few things turned into the expense it did is beyond me. While I was there my son called and asked if I were at the store and if I had my membership card for the local warehouse store. Yes and yes. He said he would be there in a few minutes as he needed gas for his motorcycle. When he showed I asked him where he had parked. He told me motioning vaguely “over there” “Oh good, I was afraid you had parked over yonder and that area isn’t safe.” Gotcha. Try to be a smart aleck with me will you? He chuckled and said he would meet me at home. At my comment of be safe to his receding back I swore I heard a ‘sure mom’

When I got home with the bounty of the hunt he helped me carry everything inside. He made a guess at the amount and only missed it by two dollars. I knew he was smart. As I was trying to put everything away, the phone rang. It was my mother. She was curious about which race or races he was planning on attending. I guess he made the mistake of telling his grandpa, or maybe I told, not sure now. Instead of my trying to remember, I just handed the phone to him. He was the one going after all. Once he finished answering her questions she had another one for me. They are calling for rain tomorrow, would I drive her to the bank? Sure mom, no problem.

Now, I don’t mean for any of that to sound like complaints. (Its actually kind of funny in retrospect) I know, I honestly know, how blessed we are that both of my parents are still living and still able to live on their own. They have a few age related issues but nothing they or we can’t handle. While the interruptions slow down my progress on various projects, and I may even roll my eyes at the phone when her number shows, but I really don’t mind. I never, ever ignore their calls and I do everything I can to help or find someone who can. They only have to ask my son once to do something while I may have to ask more than once..The fact that I can visit, talk with, help my folks is a gift that I appreciate and am grateful for. So no matter what is asked, if I am able, the answer will always be, sure mom.

Seems like normal family dynamics to me. Almost healthy even. Not that I’m anyone to ask about what a healthy relationship looks like, lol. The only thing I’d suggest in terms of setting MILD boundaries is ask your parents to try to work things so you’re not making multiple trips a day. 🙂

    • I usually don’t. And since they live right next door it isn’t as if it is that big of an inconvenience. Besides, those trips get my backside up out of this chair and moving around.

      • Silk Cords says:

Ahhh, I’d missed that part. I thought they were somewhere else in town. 🙂

      • That’s my brother, he lives across town. On this one lane, dead end, dirt road, there is me, my parents, my sister-in-law and her oldest daughter and her family. So it isn’t just me, I’m just the one who is more readily available since I retired.

Sounds like you had a busy day!!! Aw. Your doggie is so cute!!!

  3. I would have loved to see the Flyswatter remnants. Now, since I have cats, I really don’t need one of those.
