A Tourist of Life

That inner tourist, from a different perspective.

I have lived for most of my life in the same area. I currently live in the house I grew up in, on a dead end dirt road out in a  rural area. My house sits in the woods and life here is usually peaceful and without incident. It is also limiting. Last night my eyes and mind was opened to a completely different perspective. I wrote about that here: https://rebeccasrevels.wordpress.com/2021/12/12/december-twelfth-being-a-local-tourist/

But as I wrote about that visit to Charlotte, my mind kept reminding me about another type of tourist that we are. We, each and all, are tourists. We are tourists of life. Every day a new sight, a new adventure, a new learning experience. Though we may find ourselves too busy to realize, or maybe we simply limit and hide that inner spirit of wonder. The thing is, our entire life is a journey. It is fully up to us whether we wander through limited and blind or with eyes and mind open wide with wonder. No matter our circumstances.

Yes, even if our circumstances are less than stellar and perfect, we can still find the adventure in the life we are journeying through. I will make mention that I do understand that there are situations where that isn’t easy and we may have to search out those moments of wonder, but they are there. Even during the worst moments of my life, I can see those times of beauty. Life is a gift. It has been given to us to enjoy and to thrive. Yes, there are those who make that difficult, but there are still ways.

As a Christian, I know that I am a sojourner here, this is not my home. My life is a journey home. As a traveler, it is up to me to seek and enjoy. Even in the valley. Even on the city streets that holds a much different life than the countryside. It is important that as tourists, we see the dark as well as the beauty. It is up to us, that as we journey, we not only see, but seek out the ways to help others. Even and especially those who are struggling, who are different, who are lost in their own journey.

We know that this world holds all the variations of life. There are grand vistas, landscapes that take the breath in their beauty. There are also areas where the land has been destroyed through acts of man, leaving it damaged and scarred. There are people such as this.

There are areas of clear skies and open stretches of clear, clean water. There are areas choked with pollution and poisons. There are people in the same condition.

There is music to hear, art works to see, that soothe the soul and calm the spirit. There is the unpleasant noise of war, of, civilization in progress that is stressful and chaotic. There are people such as this.

For everything good, everything special, everything wondrous, there is the opposite. It is the way of things. For the light, there is dark, for healing there is sickness, for good there is bad. As we travel, we will see this as long as we walk with eyes open and aware. We should not however, seek to only enjoy and appreciate the good, but we must understand and seek to make changes of the not so good.

For those who hunger, whether for material needs, for sustenance, for emotional calm, we should find ways to feed.

For those who thirst, for knowledge, for understanding, for comfort, we need give drink.

For those who suffer, for those who want, for those in need, we should, we need, to find answers.

We need, as we journey, to make and be the difference for those who we can help. For those we may not be able to help personally, we need seek out those who can. Not simply turn a blind eye and walk on. We need, to make the journey better in any and every way we can.
Speak a kind word. Offer a smile. Do not judge it isn’t your place.

I walked through uptown Charlotte last night amazed and excited. The wonders of the walk not lost or ignored. I want to take that wonder with me. I want to hike the trails, I want to run my errands, I want to go through this life, with my head on a swivel looking out for any and all of whom I can help. I want to see all that I have not noticed before. I am a tourist, but just as state parks tell you to leave your campsite or the trails you hike clean for the next person, I seek to leave those I pass better for my having wandered by.

We can be amazed at life. We can see it with new eyes and a heart filled with wonder. Even in the small things. Even in the less than good. Should we so choose.

We don’t know what waits around the next turn. We can anticipate it with excitement, sense of adventure, and determination to make it an amazing event for all.
