September Twenty-sixth; Seeking Discernment and Truth

Allergy season.

And I wasn’t prepared.

I went absolutely nowhere yesterday, the only time I went outside was to check the mail. That in itself was odd. I watched the mail jeep pull up to my mailbox, stop and sit there for a while. By the time it pulled away, I had my shoes on and was walking out the door. There was no mail. Ah well, it got me out of the house. What I should have done, was got ready and gone to the store for allergy medicine. I woke up this morning with a headache and allergy sniffles. It happens every year with the change of the seasons, once in the autumn, and once when spring gets into full swing. The sinus issues bring on an annoying cough. I didn’t go to church. A lot of the members of the church I attend are older. The last think I want to do is frighten them over something that is no more than allergies but thanks to all forms of media and misinformation it is easy to frighten people. I’ll watch the online service even though it isn’t the same. I’ll go out later today and pick up an over the counter allergy medicine to get me through this.

I have a dear friend who has some serious medical issues going on in her family. For privacy reasons I’ll say no more but all are thankful for all the medical care that has been available and given. Improvement has been made, but there are still needs.

I don’t watch the news now with the exception of occasional weather reports. I am careful in what sources for information I choose online. We are being fed so much information and misinformation truth is difficult to decipher. Too many sources are fear based, if we are afraid, we will not act. If we are afraid, we will obey. I get emails daily telling me of various parts of civilization are ending. How much is truth, how much is conspiracy theories? How much is real and how much is evil disguised hoping to take advantage of the fear created? Is the vaccine the work of evil or the process of good? The one thing I know, it is not the mark of the beast, when that comes it will be known, not secret. Tracking devices? Everyone with a cell phone is voluntarily carrying one of those. A vaccine that appeared too soon? As one who is not a scientist, I only have opinion here, but my thoughts would be that there has been vast ongoing research on diseases of all sorts for many years. Information and new information found daily. Can anyone declare with assurance that these vaccines where not part of research already done and merely tweaked for the current pandemic? Influenza has been around for a very long time, different variants show up meaning the flu vaccine has to be tweaked for the variant of the time. Am I all knowing of this? Of course not. Can I vouch for full safety of the vaccine? No. Do we know the long term effects five, ten, twenty years from now? No. Do I wish that the bickering and lies would stop so we could move forward? Yes.

I also know something else. While so many seek to spread misinformation, conspiracies, fear and confusion, there is a source of truth. The Bible, God’s Word, is there for us. A guide for life in how to live and act in love. How to take care of ourselves and those around us. Are there things in the Bible I lack in understanding? Yes. Do I seek out further sources of information shared by those who are more learned and trusted? Yes. Do I believe, that you can read the same passages many times, and get better understanding and different messages¬† each time? Yes, because each time will be in a different moment and circumstance.

When I was battling cancer, I would walk the same paths every day. Each time I walked, there was something different to see. Every single time, there was something different. A different insect, a different flower, a different mammal, something different was there for me to see. Even as I deliberately  walked the same paths.

Such is the Bible. We read the same verses, but we find different gifts. We find understanding. We find hope. We find lessons. We find love. It is only those who take the Word and twist it to their meaning and wishes that there are problems. Just, as the various media are doing to us today. We need to cautiously and carefully learn discernment and truth in all things.

“What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive” Quote from Walter Scott in his poem “Marmion”

  1. John says:

Please be like me, completely tune out of the so-called news. You’ll be a happier person! I quit listening to the lies a long time ago… I’m glad that your friend is doing better!

    • Oh I do. My television is on so rarely I wonder even why I have the thing. Emails of doom are instantly deleted and all those videos are carefully scrutinized. Thank you., I’m glad they are better and my son especially as they were coworkers at one point.
