I would ask for a candle.
So many are struggling in a darkness that surrounds and swallows then. Leaving them unable to see where to place their next step, unable to see, what lurks before them. I would ask, for that candle, to offer that small beacon of light. To offer a way, to brighten that next step.
Often, we have had the power go out due to storms or accidents. It happens when living in a rural area and the lines are strung past trees. First we used kerosene lamps, then later we moved to battery powered lanterns to chase away the dark. Back when I worked, some of us carried small flashlights should the power fail, and emergency lighting not be enough to guide coworkers out of the dark.
Now though, in the day and time we are residing, the darkness is vast. The number of people who are struggling, with homelessness, with addictions, with hunger, with health issues, unknown. The ones who should be telling us, sharing with us what is going on around us, falling to sensationalism. Telling what brings in the most viewers, is it full truth? Is it shaded? It is a blatant lie? I won’t even go into politics. I won’t even step close to the conversation over health and safety concerns. The numbers of domestic abuse cases would be staggering, if so many were not hidden in the dark.
I would love a candle, the candle of truth. The candle of honesty. The one that shines a light on the hidden things, bringing them out for all to see and confront. Where hidden fears, taboo topics are brought out and faced. Where those bringing harm and dealt with. The crooked, the evil, those with dark agendas are brought out and exposed. Their lies uncovered. Where the people that have suffered and been harmed are helped and vindicated. Where the real and true processes are dusted off and set to right, the wrong shredded and burned.
I would love a candle, to set on a hill, shining the way to better. To hope, to laughter, to joy. I would love the candle to guide that next step. To show that the dark, is not where we are meant to reside. To show, that the monsters that lurked about us, are not indestructible, but like a roach will scurry away from any light.
I would love to have a candle, that would be a light to the truth of the Gospel, the good news. To the truth of being Christ like. Following in His light and peace. To be filled to over flowing with trust, hope, faith, belief, compassion. To forgive readily and set wrong to right. I want a candle, that will shine the light of love.
