Once upon a lifetime ago, back when my husband was still alive, the strangest thing happened. It is funny now, well heck, it was funny then. Let me tell you about the time a Cockatiel named Piper delayed a meal.
Since my husband was a long haul truck driver he missed out on a lot. One thing that annoyed him the most, was missing out on holiday meals. The man did love to eat. One Easter he couldn’t be home for Easter but he would be in the following weekend. I promised that I would cook an Easter meal for him then.
The day came, I was preparing ham, hard cooked eggs, rolls, green beans, and potato salad. It had been an interesting and frustrating morning as I tried to get everything prepared and run everyone out of the kitchen who wanted to taste test everything. But I had it almost ready. I had taken the ham from the oven, the rolls were almost done, the eggs and green beans were already in bowls. I was doing the final mixing of the potato salad. Standing at the counter spooning a big dollop of mayo into the bowl I looked up to see my husband standing in the doorway holding the bird.
As I began to ask him to not bring the bird into the kitchen, he flew from my husband’s hand and into the kitchen. Not just into the kitchen, but smack, dab square into the bowl of potato salad. Not content with simply standing, this bird by all appearances began to dance. All we could do as we tried to catch him was laugh.
Big Bird himself couldn’t have made a bigger mess than Piper did in his rain dance type moves. He had potato salad spread out all over the counter, There was no way I was serving anyone but the critters outside that potato salad.
Thankfully I had just enough ingredients to make another batch. And thankfully, my husband did not bring the bird back into the kitchen and the meal, though delayed was still enjoyed. So yes, mind and heart, I know the anniversary is approaching, but tonight, as far as the memories go, if you please, I’ll have just one.
