Day 315; Footnotes on Divisiveness

It has been no secret that some social media sites have been making people unhappy. Its disappointing, that something that was meant to bring people closer, is doing the opposite. Personally, I enjoy spending time on various social media sites.I have made friends whom I have been acquainted for many years, I make new ones almost daily. I enjoy the back and forth of general banter and the sharing of news, talents, opinions, and knowledge. Or, at least I did.

There have always been those who hide behind the anonymity of the internet to attack others. Those who troll the pages of anyone different than them. Looking for reasons to attack, ridicule, or even threaten. Most of which can be safely ignored. Their words can and do hurt, but when one realizes it is only words shouted by someone not brave enough to stand in front of you and say them, they are more easily dismissed. Those who video others and share the video with full intent to ridicule are another story. Their cruelty and lack of respect for others a sad testament of who they are.

Here we are now, in the midst of a very strange year. We are battling a pandemic that has created division. While everyone seems to agree that the virus is real, the level of risk and danger is questioned and hotly debated. It is acknowledged that there are people who have had the virus who still suffer long term issues and there are those who have died. It is true, that a greater portion have either not been infected, or have and have gotten through without serious difficulties.   There is no doubt the pandemic has created a massive upheaval to the economy and people’s lives. No one seems to agree on how to correct and repair the damage. Those who believe in and use the face coverings and other preventive measures and those who refuse.

Along with the pandemic, we had an election. Correction, are still dealing with an election. While both sides promised unity, we are now more divided than ever. Promises are easy to make. Whether you plan on trying to keep them or not. Besides that point, is the majority of people now have an “us against them” attitude. This political group is better than that one. That group seeks to build us up, now this group will. That person is ……… (insert your choice of phobia here). The insults, the accusations, the anger. Drawing lines and refusing to budge.

During the year there have been protests, which are good. If you do not agree and think something needs to be addresses and changed, by all means protest. It is a right. Get the permits, fill the square, march the route and state your point. We have also had riots, not good. To destroy the business of someone who has worked hard to build it up, to rob, steal, kill, hurt people who may have absolutely nothing to do with what ever you are rioting/ excuse me protesting about is wrong. To block roadways, to take over entire blocks, to burn cars, to show no concern for law, is wrong. You simply do not draw the people who can make a difference to your side with acts of violence.

Do you back the blue or seek to defund the police? Yes, there are bad officers, even the good officers dislike the bad because it only takes the wrong actions of one to make them all look bad. The good protect and serve the people. The bad protect and serve their own intentions.

There are so many different things that are dividing us. So many things we are allowing to divide us. Things I cannot help but believe were deliberately put in place to divide. Yet, I accept the idea that I could be mistaken.Still, A nation divided against itself cannot stand.

Social media? In some respects is like a petri dish set up to grow unrest. Members scrolling along, visiting sites, catching up on information, wishing happy birthday, then someone drops in a bubble of information, right or wrong that stirs up the anger, stirs up the hate, stirs up those who have no intention of unity. All the while, others are trying to discuss in a rational manner. Lines are drawn and no one wants to give an inch. Everyone has an opinion and everyone’s opinion is the only right opinion. No one wants to take a breath, a step back, and allow each other to seek out and discover truth.  So many think that people have lost the ability to research and learn, research and understand. While others, seek peace. Some yell and shout, others grow quiet and try to wait it out.

Too many, are too busy, drawing lines of division. If only, more would seek unity instead.
