November Second- in the Month of Thankfulness,a day of catching up

How can I already be behind on just the second day? Oh, because in the mood I was yesterday I forgot I do a daily, what I’m thankful for over the course of the month. What reminded me was a meme that came up this morning over on my social media’s memories. It was a calendar / list of what are you thankful for each day.

So let us do a game of catch up.

The first is smell. How do you narrow that down, when it is easy to love and appreciate so many different aromas? As a person who loves the outdoors, most of the smells I love would obviously come from there. The smell of an approaching summer rain, and the smell of the woods afterwards. The fresh earth smell of the decaying leaves covering the ground. The smells of flowers, wild and cultivated. The smell of freshly mowed grass. All of these, smells that remind you of being outside, of being alive and able to enjoy simple things.

What about inside? The aroma of coffee brewing early in the morning. Fresh bread, cakes or cookies in the oven, or chili simmering on the stove. A home freshly cleaned. Laundry, just out of the drier or fresh in from hanging on a line.

Every smell that we enjoy, usually bears a reason for that enjoyment. There is a thought, a memory, something that is attached to that smell that triggers the reason we like it the way we do. For a moment, we can inhale the scents and allow the memory to fill our mind and heart. The memory may not always be a happy one. Some smells may remind us of a loss, someone no longer with us. A broken relationship, an unrealized dream. To allow the memory a moment’s time and then walk away, is healing and good.

The item on the list for day two, is technology.

Like smell, this is a challenge. Technology has made a big difference in our life in many ways. The advances in themselves not a bad thing, yet the way we use it can be.

To choose one, from the enormous list, I would say computers. As annoying, frustrating and throw the thing out the window angry it can make me, what it offers is amazing. Thanks to computers and the internet, amazing things have and do happen.

We have an amount of knowledge limited only by the minds of the programmers. Our universe of understanding expands and grows every day. Great advancements in medical treatments have been found. New methods for manufacturing, farming, teaching are discovered and perfected moment by moment. Events happening around the world are shared, giving a better insight and understanding of the lifestyles and or suffering of others.

It can be and is abused. Those bent on evil find a myriad of ways to attack companies and individuals. Companies finding their data stolen, risking their operations and those whose personal information was stored within. Every moment the unwary are being scammed out of money. Identities are stolen. People are harassed and made fearful. It is easy to be thankful one minute and frustrated the next over a tool meant for good.

I know the internet has brought me into contact with people from various locations. People I would have never had contact with otherwise. Their friendship, their being an encouraging voice when my heart was having trouble hearing, the belief in me, a light when the world was dark, that in itself, the reason I chose technology for day two.

In a world vast and open, technology brings us closer and into better understanding of the universe and each other.
